A minimum of thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its role in public projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
