Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
