Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's True Threat: Economic Decline.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual danger confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A US startup can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
